Cookies are a Good Anytime Gift Idea

Thinking of a cookie evokes images of soft sugared treats for most of us. Probably, you remember cookies as a favorite childhood treat, whether your grandma made the best chocolate chip cookies in town or your mother had a terrific recipe for special occasions. There usually isn't a person nearby who doesn't like some type of cookie.

The Perfect Present

Since most everyone loves cookies, it's hard to go wrong with a cookie present. Tastes in cookies do differ, so if you can, find out what the person's favorite kinds of cookies are. A good way to find out their favorite kind of cookie is to say what kind you like so that they will talk about what kind they like. A well chosen gift of cookies is almost always a hit - there's rarely a crumb left!

If you are planning on giving a cookie gift to one of your co-workers or someone you don't know very well, consider giving a cookie basket. Since there are many kinds of cookies in a basket, the recipient will probably find something he will enjoy. In addition to making excellent gift, a cookie presentation is suited for any event and any time.

Gift cards or certificates are a good idea for when you are unfamiliar with a person's taste in cookies; that way they may select what suits them. The person can purchase the type of cookie that they will really enjoy this way.

Cookies with Creativity

Pre-made gift boxes, including cookie towers, have gained in popularity recently. The variety of cookies they contain ensures that the recipient will find a kind they like. Towers and gift boxes can be sophisticated gifts, as they come in a variety of elegant wrappings.

A "jar" or "cone" of cookie mix is a neat idea for more creative sorts. The jar of cookie mix is prepared by combining all the solid ingredients into a regular glass jar, which you can find cheaply in any store. Layering the ingredients, such as chocolate chips on the bottom, then sugar, then vanilla, then brown sugar, then cinnamon or macadamia nuts, etc., makes for a nice presentation. You might include the recipe on a card attached to the jar with a ribbon, as a finishing touch.

Also, you can place decorations all around the jar to improve the presentation. A cookie cone is done similarly, but uses a bag similar to those used to apply cake frosting. You can add a recipe tag and a variety of colorful ingredients to give the cone a creative look.

The best cookie gifts are creative ones! Having fun with your cookie gift is important, and should be remembered when working to get that perfect gift for someone else. What they want is important, and the gift should be made as special as possible.

Looking for a different Holiday Cookie? Try these Fruitcake Bars

Whether for a cookie exchange, cookies and coffee with friends or cookies as gifts, why not do something different this year and make these yummy fruitcake bars?  These frosted bars are sure to make your family and friends forget all the bad fruitcake jokes they have ever heard or told!

FRUITCAKE BARS
1 cup chopped dried pears
1 cup dark raisins
1 cup chopped dried figs
1/2 cup dark rum
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 cup butter, at room temperature
1/3 cup packed dark-brown sugar
2 eggs
2 tsps grated orange rind
1 1/4 cups chopped walnuts

Rum Buttercream Frosting:

1 lb powdered sugar
1/2 cup butter, at room temperature
3 tbsp dark rum (or 3 tbsp orange juice)
1/8 tsp salt

Place the pears, raisins, figs, and rum in a plastic zip-top food storage bag; seal. Turn to coat all the fruit. Let stand at least 4 hours or up to overnight.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with foil allowing foil to hang over on the short ends. Butter the foil and dust with flour; set aside.

In a bowl mix together the flour, baking powder, ginger, salt, and nutmeg.

In a large mixing bowl beat the butter and brown sugar until creamy, about 2 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Beat in the orange rind. Gradually beat in the flour mixture into the sugar mixture. Stir in the walnuts and the fruit mixture. Spoon the mixture into the prepared pan. Bake at 350 degrees 20 to 25 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Set the pan on a wire rack to cool.

To make the frosting: Beat the powdered sugar, butter, rum or orange juice, and salt in a large mixing bowl on low speed of an electric mixer until blended. Increase to medium speed and beat until of spreading consistency, about a couple minutes.

To remove from the pan, lift out by the foil. Spread the frosting over the top of the cooled bars. Cut into 24 bars. Decorate with sugar sprinkles or sqiggles of colored frosting.

Enjoy!
