How to Help a Teething Dog
All puppies will go through a phase of teething, as their teeth grow in. This will cause them to chew just about anything that comes close to their mouth. A dog will not understand that it is alright to chew on a dog toy but wrong to chew on your shoe. You can help your puppy get through this difficult phase.
When a puppy is teething, all they really need to sooth their sorrows is something to chew on. The more those items can get close to their gums, the happier they are. If you provide your dog with plenty of approved items to chew on, your puppy should leave your other belongings alone. Just to be sure, it is suggested to remove any low lying items and move them to high shelves. Anything that you do not want chewed on, should be moved if at all possible. Remember, this is only temporary.
If you can make an object cold, this will help your puppy even more. There are several ways to provide a cooling object to your dog to help with teething. You can mix chicken broth and water together and then fill up an ice cube tray with the liquid. Freeze this tray just as you would if making regular ice cubes. Once frozen, give them to your puppy, one at a time. Not only will the cold, frozen broth make your puppy feel better, chasing the cube around on a smooth surface will entertain them.
You can also place their normal dog toys in the freezer. Left long enough, just about any dog toy will get cold enough to provide that added relief. In addition, you may try making a small cloth wet and then freezing it. A frozen or very cold cloth can be a great way for your dog to have an object reach the areas in his mouth that are bothering him the most.
Before you know it, your puppy will be done with teething and will be a dog that does not chew apart everything in his path.
