PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS. There are some things the answerers above me are missing.

Yes, you do need a flea and tick repellent to keep your dog from getting fleas/ticks. You will also need a heartworm (caused by mosquito bites/larvae) preventative. I use Frontline Plus and Heartgard Plus Chewables. I'd recommend multi-vitamin supplements, too, to make sure your dogs diet is nutritionally balanced.
You will need a bristle brush (or a comb) for grooming (a few times a week if it has a puppy cut, everyday if it has a show cut) and a slicker brush to finish up. If you're going to be clipping the dogs nails yourself, make sure to get a container of stypic powder if you accidentally clip on or farther than the quick to stop bleeding. You can bathe it in your bath tub, although I bought a separate plastic tub for my dog. Just make sure the hair doesn't get caught in the drain. It's good to have a blow dryer and an absorbent towel on hand. I don't think the brand of ear wash really matters; I use the one from Halo, which is all natural. You can use regular scissors, but I'd recommend buying grooming shears with a ball tip (safer) for a puppy cut (short coat, same length everywhere). I honestly don't know about the fancy show cuts.
Also, remember to get an ID tag for the collar with contact information on it in case your dog gets lost. It's also a good idea to get it microchipped.
I would not buy wee wee pads/training papers. They just teach the dog that it is okay to go into the house so there isn't a guarantee that it'll always on on the pad. If the dog you're looking to get isn't housetrained, you might be able to have them do it for you for an extra fee or do it yourself, starting with crate training (look it up).

So here's the other supplies you need to get:

- Flea & tick repellent
- Heartworm preventative
- Multi-vitamin supplements
- Slicker brush
- Stypic powder
- Grooming shears
- ID tag for collar
- Crate and crate bed (if you're planning on housetraining the dog yourself)

@Becca: Accidentally TDed you. So sorry!
