How do I learn to deal with my aging mothers mental illness?
My mother lives with me and my husband and 3 kids (ages 12, 10 and 6)
I have been caring for her for about 9 years since my dad died. She is 76 years old and suffers from severe depression, obsessive/compulsive disorder
she is a cutter. And other problems which she hasn't even been diagnosed for.
She takes meds. but in all honesty nothing seems to help. She has always had mental problems but she was not treated until about 5 years ago. As a young child I spent most of my time with my grandparents. I have such a hard time dealing with her problems. She is affecting my family but I don't have the heart to put her in a nursing home. Is there places that would take her for maybe a night or two on occasion and would that be costly?
Do you have the heart to continue inflicting this on your children, your husband, and yourself? Aside from the torment you're suffering, and the impact it has on your family, she's displaying behaviors that your impressionable children might perceive as "normal", acceptable behavior. This could lead to your children emulating your mother as adolescents.
The first thing you need to get is to get accurate diagnoses for your mother. If she is misdiagnosed she may be on the wrong meds. You need to go through all of this with her physician. If you have been trying this and failed, consider asking your mother to see another doctor. The right meds might make things better.
Of course, you may just need to be with your family without the burden of having to care for your mother. I sincerely hope you will seek counseling for yourself. You've been through a lot these last nine years.
There are many resources for people dealing with aging issues, including respite care. You may find someplace that offers a sliding scale to make it more affordable. Ultimately, though, you need to determine whether or not you are capable of commiting to your mother's continued care.
Good luck.
