History tells us the cookie originated in or around the seventh century AD in Persia. Persia? That is interesting. It looked like a hard wafer. Maybe one could throw it as a disk. They were excellent for traveling because they did not crumble easily. Cookies were enjoyed from the filthy rich to the filthy. It was in the late sixteen hundreds that the cookie made it to North America.
The work cookie is derived from the Dutch word ‘koekje’or in German, ‘kuchen.’ Who does not love cookies? They say cookies go with everything. What no cookies and milk? Unheard of for sure. And the cookies left for Santa Claus at Christmas, he would be so sad. For most of us cookies is and was a part of our lives. There are so many varieties of cookies from bar cookies; drop, sandwich cookies, pressed, rolled, molded and yes even fried cookies. That might be a bit extreme but many people like them. And for those who hide their passion for raw cookie dough it is ok. We all eat it every now and then.
And don’t mention the burned cookies; well they are not burned just very brown. I’m sure no one has eaten an extra browned cookie? Come on fess up, I know you have. You just couldn’t resist the cookie even if it was over done. Cookies are a billion dollar and then some business a year. People are buying the old standbys like chocolate chip and peanut butter but they are also buying others such as designer cookies. What’s up with that? What are designer cookies for goodness sake? Look out Miss Sugar cookie, make room for Oatmeal White Chocolate Cranberry, yep that’s right and yes it is only one cookie not three. Totally confused? So am I. these designer cookies as they are called are beautiful cookies. They have hand painted and personalized names on them. Some are so intricately done, you look at it and think, this is not a cookie it is to be put on the wall. Do we eat them or stare at them? I suppose they taste alright, but I don’t think they do. They are mainly for show.
At least the old tried and true cookies are holding their own in the vast and competitive world of cookies. There are so many varieties of the plain old chocolate chip cookies it takes me ten minutes to decide on which one.
So I will continue my trip on finding the classic traditional original cookie. I will seek them out because if it was not for the true cookie, all you fancy schmancy ‘designer cookies’ would not exist. So the next time you want a cookie or two just eat the good ones and leave the rest to the other people. Sit down with a cold glass of milk and dip your original chocolate chip cookie in and savor the flavor. Or maybe a good old fashioned peanut butter cookie. Yummy.
