Baghdad batteries attributed to God?
I'm inferring that this quotation is refering to the Baghdad batteries:
"But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us." 2 Corinthians 4:7.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baghdad_Battery
My only problem with this is that it attributes the power of electricity to God. Is this another case of religion explaining the unknown, or a propaganda technique?
Neither, it is a case of wikipedia improperly understanding the verse.
The earthen jars or jars of clay are the human body, us, the treasure inside this physical form is the knowledge of God which comes from God and not from us.
Wesley's Notes
"4:7 But we - Not only the apostles, but all true believers. Have this treasure - Of divine light, love, glory. In earthen vessels - In frail, feeble, perishing bodies. He proceeds to show, that afflictions, yea, death itself, are so far from hindering the ministration of the Spirit, that they even further it, sharpen the ministers, and increase the fruit. That the excellence of the power, which works these in us, may undeniably appear to be of God"
The analogy of human beings to earthen ware or clay pottery was a powerful example with which these ancient people would be quite familar, probably having broken a number of these clay vessels themselves...
New International Version (©1984)
You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery."
New American Standard Bible (©1995)
'You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware.'"
GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995)
You will break them with an iron scepter. You will smash them to pieces like pottery."
King James Bible
Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
Adam the first man, or representative of mankind in general, was made of dust, earth, or red earth himself, further fitting into the theme of man being as a clay vessel....
The boy's name Adam a-dam is pronounced AD-um. It is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "earth". From "adama". In Hebrew, it is a generic term for "man". Biblical: in the Genesis account, he was the first man created from the red earth of Eden.
